Release Gardens

Could your garden help a rehabilitated hedgehog return to the wild?

Wherever possible, hedgehogs in our care are returned to the area where they were originally found. Sometimes this isn't possible, or the original location is no longer suitable, so we need safe alternative release sites in and around Milton Keynes.

Choosing a release site

A suitable garden is only part of the picture. We also consider the wider area, including:

  • An existing local hedgehog population

  • Access to neighbouring gardens and green spaces

  • Suitable habitat, food, water and shelter

  • Nearby roads and other hazards

  • Badger activity and known setts

Every release site is assessed individually with the welfare of the hedgehog coming first.

A hedgehog-friendly garden

Hedgehog highways
Gaps of around 13 × 13 cm allow hedgehogs to move between neighbouring gardens and green spaces.

Food & water
Fresh water should always be available. Suitable supplementary food can also be offered alongside their natural diet.

Shelter
Vegetation, log piles and hedgehog houses provide places to rest and nest.

Ponds
Ponds should have an easy escape route, such as a shallow edge, ramp or securely positioned stones.

Garden hazards
Take care with strimmers, mowers, garden tools and netting, and check vegetation carefully before cutting.

Poisons & pesticides
Wildlife-friendly methods of pest control are preferred. The use of rodenticides, pesticides and other poisons will be considered when assessing a release site.

Dogs
Dogs don't necessarily rule out a garden, but we'll need to consider their behaviour around wildlife.

Pleasantview Gem Inn

Not just pleasant on the outside, our Pleasantview Gem Inn properties are especially popular among families. With underground parking and floor-to-ceiling windows, there's no shortage of natural light or space.
